Who Can Be Detained? The Current State of Immigration Detention System

Laura Belous, Esq. is an advocacy attorney. She was born and raised in the Phoenix area. She graduated from Oberlin College with a degree in history and received a Master’s degree in Mexican American Studies and a Law degree from the University of Arizona.

She has represented clients with serious mental illnesses under an Equal Justice Works fellowship (the Florence Project), children in the custody of the Arizona Department of Children’s Services and returned to the Florence Project to mentor pro bono attorneys representing unaccompanied children. She worked as the Tucson Children’s Team managing attorney until 2018 and has worked as an adjunct instructor at the James E. Rogers College of Law.

Laura became a Florence Immigration & Refugee Rights Project (FIRRP) advocacy attorney in 2018 and managing attorney in 2024. FIRRP’s advocacy team represents immigrants in the federal court system.
