Once upon a time, it wasn't necessary to package food, medicines and other items so well that the packaging used more material than the contents. Our growing population and mobile, post-World War II society have changed all that. We can't change it back and we can't recycle everything, but there's more to reducing waste than recycling. That green triangle has three arrows.
Johanna Eubank has been with the Arizona Daily Star since 1991, first as a research assistant and archivist, and later as a digital producer and reporter. She wrote a 30-day series on recycling and now continues that series with an article on the last Sunday of each month. She is an enthusiastic crafter, often repurposing items that can't be recycled.
